Online Obituaries for the Troy, Royal Oak, Clawson & Shelby Township MI Area Roy L. Smith, 85, long time resident of Clawson, passed away peacefully Friday, April 03, 2015. Roy was born in East Detroit on October 11, 1929 to Elmer and Maria Smith. He finished high school in East Detroit and enlisted in the Navy. Roy served proudly in the Navy and was honorably discharged, and then was drafted into the Army shortly thereafter. He served in the Army for roughly seven weeks, and would have gone on to serve his full term, but his commanding officers learned of his recent honorable discharge from the Navy and subsequent draft into the Army and told him to get the heck off of the Army base (though I don't think they used the word "heck"). When he was done with his slightly unorthodox service to his country, Roy worked as a tool and die maker for a short time before finding his home at the Clawson Public Schools where he worked in the maintenance department for over 37 years and truly loved his work and the people he worked with. When he wasn't fixing things at the school, Roy was fixing things everywhere else. He was the original Mr. Fixit who could conquer any task you could throw at him. He had a knack for making things work, and was happy to help when he could. In addition to all things mechanical, Roy also really enjoyed woodworking and tinkering in the shop. In his younger years, he liked to race midgets on the dirt track for some fast paced fun. Roy was an avid outdoorsman who loved to hunt and fish, and cherished his many deer seasons he was able to spend with his son's at their property near Cadillac. And, if you're going to hunt and fish, you better be able to cook your catch...and cook Roy did. He was an accomplished home chef who not only cooked great meals, but also loved to bake. He had a number of great dishes, but those that knew him surely have had a taste of his signature dishes, Pecan Pralines, Lemon Meringue Pie, and of course, Peach Crunch. Roy was a very kind, caring man who would fix your car and fill your belly, no questions asked. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him. Roy is survived by his children, Kim (Gary) Fuson, Roy (Sherry) Smith, Keith (Kathy) Smith, and Mark (Peggy) Smith; his grandchildren, Nicole, Danielle, Michael, James, William, Christopher, Courtney, Jacob, Shawna, Shayne, Jason, Jamie, Markie, Taylor, and Jack; and several great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. Funeral Information Visitation for Roy will be on Tuesday, April 7, from 3:00 to 9:00pm, with a funeral service to begin at 7:00pm.
