Herbert Hoover Phillips

Herbert Hoover Phillips passed away on June 23, 2022 at the age of 93, after a long and fulfilling life. He was born to his parents Zollie and Julia (Guy) Phillips on October 14, 1928 in West Jefferson, North Carolina. He was the middle child of five children. Herbert served his country in the Navy aboard the USS Missouri during the Korean War and in 1951 traveled to Highland Park to work for GM inspecting parts for automobiles. He ultimately worked in this industry for 30 years, retiring from Cadillac in 1981. In 1951, Herbert met the love of his life, Dorothy (Pallman) and they eloped to Angola, Indiana where they were married. Together they raised their three children, and enjoyed 52 years of marriage until Dorothys passing in 2004. Although family life was a top priority for Herbert, he also enjoyed all types of car races: NASCAR, Xfinity and truck races. In his younger years he enjoyed bowling on a league and camping in his RV. He enjoyed motorcycle riding and driving his dune buggy. He remained proud of his 1998 Cadillac to the end. He was clever and creative and adept at fixing anything that needed fixing. He spent many years helping neighbors in Royal Oak by mowing their lawns, shoveling their walks and driving them to appointments. Herbert leaves many to mourn his passing; his daughter Penny Luebs, his sisters Jane and Carol, and eleven grandchildren: Melissa (Todd Skiles), Bill (Heather Snyder), Matt, Dan (Nicole Cornelius), Jim, Donna, Andy (Melissa Meaney), Geoff, Bobby (Shannon Sears), Jennifer (Ryan Hutley) and Cristina. He will also be missed by his eighteen great-grandchildren, Brandon, Tyler, Meredith, Emily, Nicole, Dan, Chloe, Faith, Ava, Jordan, Kevin, Sterling, Amelia, Emma, Sadie, Ben, Joey, Teresa; and many nieces and nephews. Herbert was predeceased by his wife, Dorothy, in 2004, his son Herbert "Bobby" Jr. in 2006 and son Donald in 2020, his brother in law Larry Panozzo in 2018, as well as his parents and his brothers Dewey, Daniel and Rufus. Visitation for Herbert will be held Tuesday, June 28, 2022 from 11:00 AM - 1:00 PM, with his service at 1:00 PM at Gramer Funeral Home in Clawson.
