Edith B. Murphy

Edith B. Murphy, a resident of Clinton Township for 6 years, passed away peacefully at home on October 9, 2019 at the age of 93. She was born to her parents Max and Elisabeth (maiden name: Deitrich) Rehwald on January 31, 1926 in Elbing, Germany. Edith moved to the United States at age 4 and later graduated from Denby High School in Detroit. She married the love of her life Virgil Murphy on June 29, 1946 also in Detroit. They enjoyed 67 years of marriage together before his passing on December 6, 2013. Edith was a wonderful homemaker and loving mother to their two children she spent her time raising. Edith and Virgil also sponsored a young soon-to-be bride from Asia, named Grace. Grace was fleeing her country and arranged marriages to marry one of Virgils friends in the U.S. She kept in touch with Edith and Virgil until her passing. In her free time, Edith loved gardening and cooking. She also traveled extensively with Virgil- to Germany, Tahiti, Mexico, Hawaii, Alaska, and many other places in the U.S. They especially loved staying in Florida. Edith is a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother. She will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by her family as a tough German lady! Edith is survived by her loving daughters Nancy (Edward) Kemp and Dianne (Fred) Wastell; grandchildren Amy (Rett Barrett) McArthur, Emily (Tim) Williams, Loretta (William) Derr, Gregory B. Jones, Andrea Blair, and Derek (Heather Robinson) Jones; step-grandchildren Justin (Sadie) Wastell and Tim (Lydia) Wastell; great-grandchildren Evelyn McArthur, Abby McArthur, Alex Barrett, Jacob Barrett, Alexandria Foster, Caleb Foster, Piper Williams, Damon Derr, Zackery Derr, Jeffrey (Paige Kutchen) Blair, Ethyn Blair, Mikayla Jones, Everly Wastell, and Frankie Wastell; and great-great-grandchild Atlas Blair. She is preceded in death by her husband Virgil Murphy; great-granddaughter Erika Derr; parents Max and Elisabeth Rehwald; and brother Deitrich Rehwald. A Memorial Service will be held at Faith Lutheran Church (50600 Shelby Road, Shelby Township, MI, between 22 and 23 Mile Roads) on Sunday, November 10, 2019 at 3:30pm. A dinner will follow, at Sycamore Hills golf course on North Avenue. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Faith Lutheran Church.
